Broda Pro-Tek-Tor Deck and Rail is a water and natural oil based wood finish, very penetrating, specially designed for decks, rails and fences.

Pro-Tek-Tor DR offers an excellent resistance to mold, water and U.V rays. Pro-Tek-Tor DR penetrates deeply the wood fibers and allow a durable coloration while enhancing the natural beauty of wood.

Pro-Tek-Tor DR can be easily applied from just above freezing point to warm summertime temperature. The finish will not peel, blister or crack. Low in VOC, low odor, the Pro-Tek-Tor DR can be cleaned easily with soapy water.

Directions of use

Do not apply only the Colorless Base without first applying 2 coats of tinted Pro-Tek-Tor DR. Pigments contained in the tinted Pro-Tek-Tor DR greatly contribute to the preservation of wood.

Preparation : Stir the product well before and during the application. Do not shake. Do not apply in direct sunlight. Can be applied to dry or unseasoned wood with a moisture content up to 30% (or up to 15% for Cedar). Wait one year before applying on new treated wood.

Clean all porous surfaces using a high pressure sprayer. All surfaces must be free from dust, dirt, wax, grease, oil and mold. Sand smooth wood surface using a 60-80 grit sandpaper to remove mill glaze or existing finish.

Always test for penetration, appearance and color in an inconspicuous area before applying. Protect, cover or mask all areas and surfaces that do not require coating.

Pour contents into an empty container. Loosen pigment from the bottom or original container and pour the contents back in, repeat until all pigments is in solution. Intermix all containers of the same color.

Avoid using if rain or snow is expected on the coated surface within 48 - 72 hours at low temperatures.

Do not apply under temperature below 1 °C.

Pressure Treated Wood : Test the absorbency of the wood by sprinkling water on the surface. If the water penetrates into the wood quickly, the wood is ready to finish. If the water beads up or does not penetrate, allow the wood to weather and test for absorbency again. Do not sand pressure treated lumber. Due to the green or brown tone of many brands of pressure treated lumber, the colour of the Broda may look different from the colour selected.

Application : Outside, If the wood surface is warm to the touch, dampen the wood surface prior to the first application.

Apply the first coat using a stain brush, roller, stain pad or a sprayer, impregnating all the surface until complete saturation. Spread any spills and puddles.

Let dry for 12 to 48 hours.

Apply a second coat of Pro-Tek-Tor Dr after the complete drying of the first coat. Apply by completely imbibing the surface until complete saturation of wood. Spread any spills and puddles.

FAQ

Why can Broda's Pro-Tek-Tor oil be used on very damp wood (30% humidity)?

The answer lies in Broda's unique formula, which uses modified linseed and tung oils, natural pigments, and water as a solvent. This combination allows the oil to penetrate the wood even if it is very damp. In fact, it is even recommended to moisten a very dry surface so that it can better absorb Broda's emulsified oil.

Once absorbed, the water slowly evaporates and the oil and pigments remain trapped in the wood, making the process effective and long-lasting. Additionally, it is easy to restore without sanding. Before starting your project, be sure to read the product information carefully and perform a color test on your wood.

Can I apply Broda's Pro-Tek-Tor product on a surface that has already been stained?

The application of Pro-Tek-Tor should not be done on a surface other than bare wood or another coat of Pro-Tek-Tor already applied, with the purpose of refreshing it. On the other hand, Broda oil needs to be absorbed by bare wood.

If the surface to be treated has already been treated with another product, Broda oil will not be absorbed by the wood and will eventually peel quickly off the surface of the wood. Therefore, it is imperative to always properly prepare the wood before applying Pro-Tek-Tor by meticulously following the manufacturer's instructions.

How to restore a Pro-Tek-Tor Finish after a few years without darkening the color too much?

The best way to do so is to diute 50% of the original Pro-Tek-Tor color with 50% of the clear product. This technique helps prevent discoloration and enhances protection against moisture, preserving your investment.

It is recommended to initially focus on the west and south sides of your house, which are typically the most exposed to UV rays, by adjusting the color with a 50% dilution of Clear Pro-Tek-Tor Oil emulsion. This will allow you to maintain the original hue without altering the colors on the east and north sides. If all four walls are still in good condition, applying clear Pro-Tek-Tor to the entire walls can also be considered.

Can you apply 3 coats of Pro-Tek-Tor DR on a new red cedar deck?

It is recommended to provide three coats of protection rather than the two base coats recommended by the manufacturer. However, it is important to note that applying a third coat may make the color more opaque, which is not necessarily a defect in itself.

We suggest considering a third coat only if the colors are relatively pale, such as for colors in the series 001 to 299, to avoid excessive color intensification. It is recommended to do a test before making a final decision. Another option could be to apply a third coat of the clear product, which would offer additional protection against wear on horizontal surfaces.

What are the differences between Prato-Verde's Pareo Zero and Broda's Pro-Tek-Tor products?

Pareo Zero oil emulsion from Prato-Verde and Pro-Tek-Tor by Broda are two similar products, both being emulsified oils containing a blend of modified oil, water, and colorant that acts as a UV filter.
