Can shellac be used as a replacement for stain?

If a low intensity of color is desired, such as adding a touch of amber to maple, an orange shellac can be used to achieve this effect. However, multiple coats of shellac may be needed to intensify the color on light-toned species or exotic woods. On the other hand, if intense colors are desired, it is better to use a stain.
