Component A

Oil Plus 2C Component A is also sold separately in small sizes for consumers who wish to proceed with sampling oil colours before undertaking a finishing project.

Pure vs Natural Colour

The Pure variety contains no colouring pigments while Natural contains creamy white/yellowish pigments. Although Pure contains no pigments, Linseed Oil (the base ingredient in RMC Oil Plus 2C) has a colour that slightly enhances/darkens wood compared to its raw state. Although Pure is the most popular colour in the Rubio Monocoat range, if the goal is to keep the colour of your wood in its raw state, you should incorporate just enough pigments in order to counter the darkening effect of any wood finishing oil. In order to ensure the desired effect, it is strongly recommended to carry out a colour test beforehand or to contact our technical service (you must know the wood species and also provide us with photographs beforehand). For further information, you can also take a look at this blog entry from Rubio Monocoat.

Colors shown are for information purposes only: Actual colors may vary from the color on your screen due to monitor differences.

Directions for use

  1. Sand the surface scratch-free. Finish with screening net 100 to 150, depending on the sanding method used.
  2. Vacuum thoroughly, eliminate remains of dust with Rubio Monocoat Cleaner or WoodPrep and wait until the surface is completely dry. Consult the Technical datasheet of the product you will use before proceeding.
  3. Mix component A to obtain a homogeneous mixture, then mix the two components thoroughly for 1 to 2 min. respecting a ratio of approximately 3 units of component A to 1 unit of component B (ratio 3: 1). Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C should be used within 4 - 6 hours maximum after mixing components A and B.
  4. Spread a small amount of RMC Oil Plus 2C using an applicator, a lint-free cotton cloth, a polisher or other suitable tool. Note that it does not matter how the oil is initially applied. The crucial aspect is to polish well using the applicator pad or the polisher afterwards in order to ensure proper penetration of the oil into the wood grain. For manual application on floors, it is necessary to work in sections.
  5. After polishing the surface well with the applicator pad or a polisher, allow the oil to sit for 3 to 5 minutes on the surface. Then wipe off ALL excess oil from the surface using a cotton cloth. The key to a good application is to remove ALL oil that remains on the surface, wiping it off the wood completely. It is impossible to remove too much oil: the oil that will color and protect the wood has already penetrated the wood grain at this point. Allowing excess oil to remain and dry on the surface will cause problems (sticky floor). The surface should feel almost dry to the touch after you finish applying and wiping off the excess oil.
  6. Let the surface dry for 12 to 24 hours depending on ambient conditions (humidity and temperature).
  7. Vacuum cleaning can be done after 2 days at the earliest. Cleaning with soap and water can be done after 5 days, allowing for complete cure.

For mechanical application (optional but recommended for floors), for the restoration of a surface already treated with Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C, and for any additional information, please refer to the product data sheet.

Tips & tricks:

  • The product may NOT be diluted!
  • Stir the product well before application.
  • When using several containers at one site, it is required to mix them for an even result.
  • Please consult your distributor if you want to use the A component without the B component (accelerator).
  • After application, the surface may appear a bit glossy. This will disappear after cleaning 2-3 times with Rubio Monocoat Universal Soap or Rubio Monocoat Surface Care.
  • If you want a more intense colour, use Rubio Monocoat WoodPrep instead of Rubio Monocoat Cleaner. For more info please consult the technical datasheet of Rubio Monocoat WoodPrep.
  • Rubio Monocoat Tannin Primer can be used before applying Rubio Monocoat Oil 2C for horizontal surfaces often subjected to liquids, such as worktops or bathroom furniture. For more info please consult the technical datasheet of Rubio Monocoat Tannin Primer.
  • The smoother the surface is, the less oil and pigments will penetrate in the wood resulting in a less coloured surface.

FAQ

Can I apply a stain before a coat of Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C?

The manufacturer does not recommend using a product that may seal the wood before applying Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C. Rubio Monocoat recommends using their Precolor Easy product instead to achieve a different color from those offered in the colored Oil Plus 2C range. If you insist on using a water-based or oil-based stain, it is better to perform tests before starting the project.

How to obtain an intense color on maple before applying Rubio Monocoat's Oil Plus 2C?

The colored Oil Plus 2C from Rubio Monocoat has a low pigmentation when applied to light wood species such as maple, pine, cherry or beech. It is therefore recommended to use RMC Precolor Easy for a more intense coloration on these light woods.

However, it is important to note that Precolor Easy does not protect the wood, so a coat of Oil Plus 2C oil must be applied afterwards to ensure complete protection.

How can you fix dull areas on a floor that was treated with Rubio Monocoat's Oil Plus 2C Pure?

This type of problem occurs when the floor lacks a sufficient amount of oil, either due to premature wear or applying insufficient product during the initial application.

To correct the issue, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the floor using Rubio Monocoat's Universal Maintenance Soap. Once the surface is clean and completely dry, apply Rubio Monocoat's Universal Maintenance Oil according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Can I use Oil Plus 2C without using the accelerator?

Absolutely, you can use this oil, whether tinted or not, to finish small decorative furniture, woodworking projects, or any other decorative element. The oil is robust enough for small projects that are not heavily used.

The Accelerator, on the other hand, is a product that speeds up the drying of the oil while enhancing its hardening. The oil becomes more resistant and durable against wear and tear.

How can the sheen of an Oil Plus 2C Pure oil finish be improved if it appears dull?

The sheen of an oil finish can vary depending on the application and the type of wood treated. It is possible to apply a thin coat of Universal Maintenance Oil to improve the sheen of the finish. However, it is important to check the product data sheet and only use a small amount on a surface of 1 to 2 square yards at a time. It is also possible to apply a second coat of Oil Plus 2C to create superior protection and improved sheen.

Can two coats of Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C be applied?

It is possible to apply two coats of Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C, but it is important to allow the first coat to dry completely before applying the second. As these oils tend to become very hard when drying, it is recommended to lightly sand the first coat with a Siavlie 320 Grit maroon pad to dull the surface and improve the adhesion of the second coat.
