Gel Stain from General Finishes is home of the popular Java Gel Stain featured across the nation's social media for upcycling furniture and cabinets. Gel wood stains are heavy-bodied and do not penetrate as deeply into the wood as liquid oil-based wipe-on stains do, providing the deepest, richest colors of any oil-based stain available.

General Finishes Gel Stain produces a durable and easy to apply polyurethane finish. Its unique gel formula is ideal for furniture, crafts and woodworking projects. The Gel form helps to minimize blotches compared to traditional stains, resulting in an even finish even on difficult to stain woods, such as Maple, Aspen or Pine.

Supplied in an easy to control, gel consistency, Gel Stains are easy to apply by wiping on with a rag. There’s no messy splashing, drips, or runs.

FAQ

What types of finishing products can be applied over Gel Stain?

It is possible to use almost any transparent finishing product over gel stain, such as Lacquer, Varnish, Gel Topcoat, Oil, or Wax.

However, the most important factor for achieving a successful result is to respect the necessary time for complete drying of the applied gel stain coat(s).

Can I apply multiple coats of General Finishes Gel Stain?

It is possible to apply gel stain in multiple coats to achieve a more intense color, up to full opacity if desired. This technique is useful for modifying the color and appearance of a finished piece of furniture or wood surface, or for staining raw wood to our desired color preferences.

Oak Bannister Makeover

Shannon Morris · Aug 9, 2021

So easy to use and results were beautiful. Used a custom blend of 2 parts Carbon Grey, 1 part Black, 1 part Java. Don't have pictures of the entire project yet, but also did our front entryway staircase and loft.

Amazing Stuff! Easy to use with professional results!

STEVE SNOW · Jan 5, 2021

We used this to to a face-life on our 20 year old solid wood bedroom suite. It turned our beautiful and like a new set. We saved thousands on a new suite by using this. A satin clear coat really "topped it off"!

Great Stain!
