The HSF5000 Primer / Surfacer / Filler is a waterborne formula engineered to be used on open grained wood, MDF and engineered veneer to provide a smooth, non-textured feel to the base substrate.

HSF5000 is available in a neutral color base for bright wood finishing, or in pigmented primer white for use underneath pigmented topcoats. The HSF5000 Primer / Surfacer / Filler reduces the total number of intermediate sealer and topcoat applications required to obtain a final, highbuild finish.

HSF5000 has a very fast drying process, which allows topcoats to be applied only 2 hours after the last coat has been dry sanded.

Tannin Blocker

HSF5000 is not a good tannin blocker and wood substrates prone to heavy tannin or stain bleed will require the application of a water based stain/tannin blocking primer, like BIN by Zinsser as a base coat under this primer. A solvent based or alcohol based tannin/stain blocker can be used as a tannin blocker under the HSF5000 primer. Solvent based primers need to be fully dry and cured followed by a wipe down of a mixture of 1:1 water and denatured alcohol.  Alcohol based primers, like BIN, need to be reduced 1:1 with denatured alcohol to prevent crazing/crackling of the HSF5000 primer.

Directions for use

Preparation:

  • Prepare the surface by sanding with 220-grit sandpaper.
  • Eliminate all dust, solvent and oil from the surface to be treated.
  • Depending on the finishing schedule, apply pre-stain sealer and/or wood stain prior to grain filling.
  • HSF5000 can be tinted with water-soluble dyes and/or pigments to create a ground color for natural grain color enhancement.
  • For applications on MDF or maple, there may be a migration of minerals or other components present in the MDF and create yellowing in the finish. Target Coating recommends applying two coats of BIN Primer-Sealer Stain Killer before applying white HSF5000.
  • HSF5000 can be mixed with 5% CL100 CrossLinker in order to increase sub-level hardness and adhesion when the product is applied on surfaces that are difficult to finish.

Application:

  • Spray, brush or roll-apply HSF5000 onto prepared substrate.
  • Apply HSF5000 at a 2-3 mil wet film thickness per coat.
  • Let each coat dry at room temperature for at least one hour.
  • Sand each coat with 320-grit sandpaper to remove any surface defect.
  • Apply at least 2 coats to obtain a filled grain effect. This will vary depending of the wood species being treated. Repeat if required to complete fill in negative grain.
  • Let dry 2 hours between each filler application to ensure proper drying of underlying filler.
  • Apply stain or dye again if necessary to egalize color tone.

Review

Sands very smooth

Jeff · Jul 2, 2020

I've only used this primer in conjunction with cl100 but it was a nice high building primer that sanded out great. Needs to be thinned a little bit in my experience but it lays down really well. Will use for every project with a 6500 topcoat.
