Methyl Hydrate, also known as Methanol, wood alcohol or Methyl alcohol, is used in wood finishing for the cleaning of paint brushes that were used with shellac. Methyl Hydrate can also be used to dissolve gum and resins.

Methyl Hydrate can be used in shellac preparation to delay the drying time. Methyl Hydrate is colorless and highly flammable.
