Brazilwood is used to create stain, going from red to brownish yellow. Brazilwood can be used with or without a mordant.

Brazilwood is a vegetable product, colorant, soluble in alcohol or by decoction in boiling water.

Directions of use

Preparation : To extract the color of the Brazilwood, place 120 g of wood bark in a cheesecloth or in a nylon stockings and let soak in 4 liter of water for 1 week.

After the soaking, put the bark and the liquid in a covered cooking pot and boil vigorously for 1 hour.

This preparation can be used with different mordants. The potassium dichromate will give a red burgundy, copper sulfate, pink to red, sulfate of iron, gray to black, alum, crimson color.

When we add 10% of white vinegar to the Brazilwood preparation, the color will pass from red to rusty red and if we add baking soda, the color will pass to blue and magenta.

Always do a test to validate the color.
