Is it absolutely necessary to apply a colored lacquer on a primer that is already tinted for the project?

The answer is no. If the surface is properly primed with two to three coats of colored primer, it is not essential to apply a lacquer of the same color as the primer. Two coats of clear lacquer in the sheen of your choice will suffice. This finish has the advantage of avoiding the wear of a colored product and ensuring that wear occurs on a transparent product. You can always add a coat of lacquer for maintenance after several years.

Note that there are several lacquer companies that offer to add a catalyst to your primer and finishing lacquer, which will increase the hardness of the finish and resistance to abrasion and household cleaning products. Finally, it is important to maintain lacquered finishing projects using an oil-based soap (such as Black Soap) or a neutral pH soap.
