How to Use

Preparation: Bare wood must be dry and free of contamination. If necessary, prior to sanding, degrease the surface with Paint & Varnish thinner. Sand the surface with a 120 grit sandpaper and wipe off all dust before applying the varnish. Filtering varnish helps remove impurities.

Application on new wood:

  • Stir contents well before application. Note that the Varnish may have a milky appearance, but will dry to a clear coat.
  • Apply first coat thinned approx. 50%. Allow 24 hours to cure and sand with 220 grit dry abrasive paper.
  • Apply second coat thinned approx. 25% and third coat thinned approx. 15%. Allow each coat 24 hours to cure and lightly sand each coat with 280 grit dry abrasive sandpaper.
  • Complete the varnish system by applying at least four more coats, thinned 0-5% as needed (In tropical climates, an additional six coats is recommended). Allow a minimum of 24 hours between coats and sand lightly with 320 or 400 grit wet or dry abrasive paper.
  • In order to obtain a varnish system with sufficient build-up, aggressive sanding or sanding machines are not recommended between (fresh) coats.

  • For manual application, use Epifanes brush thinner

  • For spray application, use Epifanes spray thinner

Application on already varnished wood : Apply one or two coats every year. Epifanes Clear High Gloss Marine Varnish can be applied on almost any marine mono- or bi-components varnishes. Drying Time: 3 hours dustfree dry - 24 hours before recoating.
