Why is it necessary to wet bamboo (sponging) to open the pores before applying colored oil?
It is highly recommended to sponge bamboo, maple, or other very hard wood species before applying colored oil. After the final sanding is done, the wood needs to be dusted off and sufficiently wetted so that it can absorb water. After two hours, the surface should be lightly hand-sanded with a 220-grit sandpaper to smoothen it before applying the oil.
