Why do ultra-matte varnishes become dull or milky when applied on black or very dark paint?

Ultra-matte varnishes have gained popularity and are highly appreciated by those who restore antique furniture to give them a new life. These varnishes contain a high amount of matting agents, which are responsible for their ultra-matte finish.

In many cases, this varnish can appear slightly cloudy or milky when it dries on very dark or black paints. This issue can be addressed by starting with an initial application of a satin or semi-gloss varnish, which retains its transparency when drying and avoids the cloudy appearance. Then, finish with one or two coats of ultra-matte varnish to achieve that soft and warm effect without shine.
