Why should Spray gun application of decorative paints be avoided?

When using decorative paints (such as Sico) to lacquer furniture, It is worth noting that these paints were not originally formulated to be used with a spray gun, as they are typically applied with a roller or brush without being thinned. However, if you choose to spray these paints, you will need to consider their high viscosity and select the appropriate nozzle and needle for your spray gun, such as a 1.8 to 2 mm needle, and thin the paint with water by 10 to 30%. Dilution allows the paint to flow better through the spray gun, but it may also reduce its resistance due to the decrease in solids content.

If the paint is not sufficiently diluted or if your spray gun is not properly adjusted, you may experience textural issues, such as small orange peel bumps. To avoid this, do not begin spraying until you have perfected your technique. Conduct atomization tests on cardboard or wood to achieve optimal results. Lastly, after applying the decorative paint, it is recommended to safeguard the finish with a high-quality anti-yellowing transparent lacquer or varnish. Keep in mind that environmental factors, such as temperature and humidity, may also impact the final outcome.
