Is it preferable to varnish or oil a kitchen island or a countertop?

It is not recommended to varnish a surface in regular contact with water or other liquids. We recommend treating these surfaces with oil to facilitate maintenance and enhance the beauty of the wood. Unlike varnishes, oils do not react to moisture and will not trap moisture under the surface. Varnishes can lift and gray and black stains can appear if they absorb water. Unfortunately, once water has penetrated under a varnish, it is too late for repairs, and the entire finish must be redone. By using finishing oil, the wood can breathe.

The preparation process is the same, whether the wood is varnished or oiled. It is important to sand it well before applying the recommended oil for this kind of project. Mineral oil should be avoided at all cost, as it never dries and provides very little protection to the wood.
