How can gaps between planks in century-old floors be filled?

Filling gaps between planks is a common issue in ancestral homes, but there are solutions available. If the gaps between the planks are no larger than ⅛ inch (3 mm), a thorough cleaning followed by the application of a mixture of Vermeister's Zero Filler product and dust from the initial floor sanding can be effective.

It is important to avoid mixing wood glue and sawdust, as this may impede proper adhesion of subsequent finishing products. Zero Filler is specifically designed to blend with the color of the stain or oil used for coloring. In cases where multiple gaps need to be filled, an appropriately sized rope can be placed in the gap with woodworking glue, and then the mixture of Zero Filler and sanding dust can be used to complete the repair. Careful sanding is required to achieve a level surface.

If the gaps exceed ⅛ inch, filling them with pieces of wood and glue is necessary to properly secure the inserts. Following that, thorough sanding is required. It is important to consider the width of the gap when selecting the appropriate repair method.
