What type of varnish, oil or wax is best for finishing children's toys?

It is crucial to select a safe varnish when choosing a product to protect toys for children. Water-based varnishes are a safe option as they are non-toxic, odorless, dry quickly, resist water and scratches well, and are easily cleanable. For a natural and eco-friendly option, beeswax and carnauba wax can be mixed with linseed oil or other natural oils to create a protective blend.

Low-VOC varnishes are also a less harmful alternative for health and the environment. If you wish to add color, you can do so with a water or natural oil-based stain or a low-VOC paint, followed by two coats of varnish to protect the color.

Before using any type of varnish, it is essential to carefully read the product label and follow the application instructions. It is also recommended to do a test on a small, non-visible area of the toy to check the wood's reaction and desired finish.
