Satin finish sanding?

mark · Sep 16, 2021, 17:40

Hi

I have a guitar I am finishing with a satin finish lacquer (this one: https://ardec.ca/en/p/343/tone-finish-clear-lacquer-aerosol?variant=2098)

I want to know what is the best way to sand any surface imperfections after finishing to give it a smooth finish. Usually I do this with wet sanding and then buff it out, but because I am doing this with a satin finish I do not want to buff it to a shine.

Also - how long is recommended to wait after applying the final coat to sand smooth.

thanks!

Hi Mark,
Our technician is on holidays right now. He will be back within a week or so.

I am not the expert so I am reluctant to give you any direction without researching first.

Can I get back to you when the technicien has returned?

Sorry I was not of more help!

Thank you so much Marilyn! I am not in any rush so waiting for his return is no problem at all. thanks!

Hi Mark,

Sorry about not getting back to you sooner.

Yes you have to sand without a doubt in order eto remove imperfections. We suggest using a 600 grit paper.

Do not buff.

Once that has been done you apply another coat.

For the final sanding you can wait about 24 hours that should be enough.

Hope this helps!

Perfect, thank you so much!

Hi,

Follow up question to this thread - I bought 4 cans of the satin finish and I don't like the sheen - it is a bit too glossy. Am I able to just purchase a single can of the flat finish and spray over top of the existing satin finish to achieve a flatter look?

thanks!

Thank you so much for the quick reply!

Sorry, one other question, if i was attempting to match the sheen (not exact, just a duplicate) of this guitar finish would you suggest a flat or dead flat option?

thanks!

Hi,

It is really hard to say without seeing it live.

Looks like it might be dead flat but can't be 100% sure.

Sorry!

mark · Nov 25, 2021, 11:29

Thank you! I think I'll opt for the dead flat - for sanding this finish, should it be done with 600 or higher?

Marilyn · Technical Support · Nov 25, 2021, 12:33

Hi,

600 is good.
