SANDING AND PREPARATION OF NEW FLOORS
- Sand and prepare the floor using industry-accepted methods.
- For an unstained floor, make your final sanding pass with 80 to 120-grit paper, then use a multi-disc buffer with 120 to 150-grit paper. This burnishing will reduce grain raise.
- Use a Tampico brush on a buffer pad and vacuum thoroughly.
- Tack the surface with a dry Bona microfiber mop or cloth.
- Apply the Bona finishing system.
THE BONA ClearSeal SYSTEM
Apply 1 to 2 coats of Bona ClearSeal and 2 coats of a Bona waterborne finish. Bona ClearSeal minimizes side-bonding and grain raise, provides a build layer, and prevents the finish from penetrating into the wood surface. Visit bona.com for more product information.
RECOMMENDED APPLICATORS
- Bona Floor Coater, Bona Roller, Bona Cut-In Pad.
- NOTE: Use a clean applicator for the sealer and a separate clean applicator for the finish.
MIXING INSTRUCTIONS
SHAKE WELL BEFORE USING. DO NOT THIN. Insert the provided filter.
SEALING
SHAKE WELL BEFORE USING. DO NOT THIN.
- Pour a 15 cm (6 in) wide line of sealer along the starting wall. Follow the grain of the wood.
- Using a pre-dampened floor applicator, draw the sealer forward in the direction of the wood grain, moving it toward the opposite wall. To maintain a wet edge at all times, hold the floor applicator at an angle (snowplow style).
- At the end of each pass, turn the applicator and pull it toward you through the puddle, then feather the applicator parallel to the wet edge.
- Feather out all turns. Do not press down too hard or move too fast to prevent drips from flying off the applicator.
- ENSURE YOU ARE USING THE RECOMMENDED COVERAGE RATE OF 46 TO 56 M² (500 TO 600 SQ. FT.) PER GALLON. DO NOT SPREAD TOO THIN. Uneven coverage can cause pooling or color variations. Some wood species may require a second coat to achieve the desired appearance.
- Allow each coat of sealer to dry for 1 to 2 hours. High humidity and/or low temperature conditions will extend drying time (recommended conditions: 18 to 27 °C / 65 to 80 °F, 40 to 60% relative humidity).
- For smoother results, see the Intercoat Abrasion section. At a minimum between coats, vacuum and tack thoroughly with a Bona microfiber cleaning pad (dry or slightly dampened with water).
INTERCOAT ABRASION
It is not necessary to abrade the sealer unless more than 48 hours have elapsed since the previous coat was applied. However, for smoother results, abrade Bona ClearSeal using 1 to 2 Bona Conditioning Pads (stacked) and 1 to 2 180 to 240-grit Bona Diamond abrasives. Thoroughly clean the abraded floor using the Bona PowerScrubber OR vacuum and tack with Bona microfiber cleaning pads (dry or slightly dampened with water).
Tip: After abrading Bona ClearSeal, damp-tack the floor to highlight any areas where the abrasive may have burned through the sealer. A second application of sealer may be necessary to cover burn-throughs before applying a Bona waterborne finish.
CLEANUP
Application tools should be cleaned with water and stored in an airtight container.
