Smart Strip PRO Professional Strength Paint Remover is an industrial paint remover that removes up to 20 layers of architectural, industrial, and high-performance coatings in a single application.

Professionals require superior performance, which is why this water-based, low VOC paint stripper does not contain methylene chloride or NMP, making it the ideal solution for professional contractors and their workers. Smart Strip PRO is non-carcinogenic, non-flammable, non-caustic, and fully biodegradable.

Smart Strip PRO removes oil, water, latex, acrylic, epoxy, urethane, and elastomeric paints and coatings on interior and exterior wood, brick, stone, metal, concrete, plaster, tile, decking, and many more! Works best on post-1980 paints and coatings. Smart Strip PRO does not require neutralization and is easily applied with a brush or airless spray applicator.

For Professional Use Only

Smart Strip PRO Paint Remover is now available in a convenient 14 oz (414 ml) Bag-on-Valve (BoV) spray can!

Directions for Use

Test Patch

Always perform a test patch on a small area before full-scale application. Testing is the best way to determine product efficacy, required thickness, and optimal dwell time for your specific project. Skipping this test may result in application failure, unnecessary additional coats, or using the wrong product.

Air and Surface Temperatures

Smart Strip PRO is a water-based gel stripper, meaning it can freeze, evaporate, or harden depending on ambient temperatures. It is engineered for optimal performance between 40°F and 90°F (4.4°C and 32.2°C). While it can be applied outside this range, effectiveness and dwell time may be affected.

Depending on the substrate, the surface temperature is typically 10 to 12 degrees cooler or warmer than the air temperature. Keep this in mind during extreme cold or hot weather. The product may fail to react below 40°F (4.4°C).

Surface Preparation

Prepare the surface by pressure washing or rinsing the substrate to remove any loose debris or peeling coatings. Allow the substrate to dry completely before applying Smart Strip PRO. Protect all adjacent surfaces you do not wish to strip by covering them with plastic sheeting.

Application and Coverage

Apply using a brush, roller, or airless sprayer. Spread a coat approximately 1/8 to 1/4 in thick (3 to 6 mm), depending on the coating type and the number of layers to remove. Refer to your initial test patch for best results. If a second coat is required, a thickness of 1/8 in (3 mm) should suffice.

If using an airless sprayer:
Ensure it can pump at least 3/4 GPM (2.8 L/min).
Use a new 3/8 in hose with a 0.025 to 0.031 in textured tip.
Remove all filters and lower the pressure before spraying.
Never leave unused product sitting in the sprayer or fluid lines for extended periods.
* Keep a bucket of clean water handy after use to flush the pump and prevent clogging.

To remain active, the Smart Strip PRO gel formula must stay wet. Covering it with Dumond Laminated Paper (sold separately) immediately after application is strongly recommended to accelerate stripping, retain moisture, and simplify cleanup. Lay the paper directly over the gel and smooth it gently without pressing too hard to prevent air pockets.

Dwell Time

The time required to soften and lift coatings varies based on the number of layers, coating type, and surface temperature. Test patches will help pinpoint the right dwell time. Higher temperatures speed up the process, but increase the risk of the product drying out prematurely.

Allow 1 to 24 hours of dwell time before removing paint layers. Do not allow Smart Strip PRO to dry out and harden. If this occurs, apply a thin coat of fresh gel over the dried areas to reactivate it.

Removal and Cleanup

Use a scraper or pressure washer to strip the coatings. When using Dumond Laminated Paper, work in sections of 1 to 2 sq ft (0.1 to 0.2 m²) at a time to prevent other areas from drying out. Insert a putty knife, spatula, or paint scraper beneath the paste and lift the paper while scraping slowly.

Scrub all surfaces thoroughly with a sponge or nylon bristle brush using water (or a pressure washer). Rinse completely with clean water to remove all remaining residue. Collect the paint and product waste, place it in heavy-duty plastic bags, and dispose of it in accordance with federal, state/provincial, and local regulations.

In Case of Drying: If Smart Strip PRO dries, it will harden and bond to the substrate. If this happens, peel off as much Dumond Laminated Paper as possible, then reapply a coat of Smart Strip PRO to reactivate the material. Let it sit for 1 to 2 hours before removal.

Works!

Daniel Campbell · Nov 24, 2024

Finally, a “green” stripper that actually works! I am restoring a 1947 Cessna 140 with many layers of polyurethane and epoxy paint. I have tried many very expensive industrial stripper’s, but none would dissolve the hardened coatings. To my pleasant surprise, when I tested Smart Strip PRO on some small panels, the polyurethane paint started to wrinkle up in minutes. With some experimentation, I discovered that the stripper works very well if left to work overnight and covered with plastic wrap. Come back in the morning and paint generally lifts off easily. An added bonus is that the stripper is easily cleaned up with water and does not appear to be caustic. I highly recommend this product and is now my paint stripper of choice.
