Directions for Use

Preparation

Moisture level of wood needs to be 15% or less before beginning. (Wait 3 months before applying on new wood, one year on new treated wood.) Stir well with a stick before and while using. Do not apply in sunlight or at a temperature below 10 °C. The wood must be completely dry, clean and sanded with a 80 grit sandpaper.

For an application on sawn wood or to obtain a softer coloration, it’s possible to dilute Pareo with an equal part or less of Pareo Colorless Base.

Do not only apply the Pareo Colorless Base. The pigments contained in the tinted Pareo are essential for the wood conservation. The dilution of colored Pareo with Pareo Colorless Base decreases UV resistance.

Application

Apply with a stain brush or a stain pad in very thin coats, wipe off any excessive oil with a cotton rag.

If more than 24 hours have passed since the first application, sand lightly with a 120 grit paper before the second application.

The use of a spray gun is highly unsuitable for vertical application. For horizontal surfaces, wipe off any excessive oil after spray gun application.

FAQ

Can a color of Pareo oil be diluted if it appears too dark for a specific project?

It is not recommended to dilute colored Pareo oils, as this weakens the product's UV protection. If you really must do it, you should use regular Pareo colorless oil for dilution, but do not exceed 20% dilution.

What are the differences between Pareo exterior finishing oil and Pareo Zero oil?

The differences lie in the composition and properties of the two oils. Pareo Zero oil emulsion from Prato-Verde is modified to be water-soluble, making it emulsifiable. Due to its high water content, it offers less dense coverage than traditional Pareo oil, which is solvent-based. However, it is more environmentally friendly, contains zero VOCs and zero solvents, is almost odorless, and can be cleaned with water. Although its purchase cost is lower, it still offers excellent durability.

On the other hand, regular Prato-Verde Pareo Oil is composed of a blend of vegetable oils and mineral solvents, and does not contain water. It emits volatile organic compounds (VOCs) due to the solvents used. However, it offers superior coverage, up to 40% more than Pareo Zero oil in some cases, and the final result is aesthetically richer. However, it requires the use of a mineral thinner for equipment cleaning.

Pareo Zero is generally used for wood fences as well as treated wood decks and patios. The blend of water and oil facilitates absorption by the wood, allowing the oil and colorants to remain trapped in the wood cells for better UV protection.

Can you apply Osmo's Country Color on a surface already treated with Pareo oil?

Yes, it is possible to apply Osmo Country Colour oil finish on wood surfaces that have already been treated with Prato-Verde Pareo Oil. However, it is essential to clean the wood thoroughly to ensure maximum adhesion of the new product. It is also important to test the color beforehand and apply two coats of the product.

What can cause a slightly sticky finish on a deck oiled with Pareo?

Generally, when Pareo Finishing Oil does not dry properly, that is, after 24 hours, it is due to wood that is too damp. If the application was done early in the morning and there was dew or if it rained the day before the application, it is likely that the wood is too damp.

However, this does not have serious consequences. It is simply recommended to give nature time to do its job. After a few days, the finish will be dry and everything will return to normal. During this period, it is advisable to avoid using the deck.

Review

High quality exterior finishing oil & exactly what I needed

Chris Sears · Sep 26, 2020

After refinishing our 10 foot cedar table I built 15 years ago, I applied 2 coats of Pareo Finishing Oil (cherry) with a light sanding in between. Both the transparency and colour of the oil are exactly what I wanted. Looking forward to serving more family meals around this large table!
