EM1000 universal sanding sealer is a water-based coating specially designed to seal the wood grain while allowing a perfect coloration.

The philosophy behind EM1000 Universal Sanding Sealer is to offer a truly clear, ultra-low VOC water based wood coating that allows the true substrate color to reveal itself while remaining multi-functional as a universal intermediate base coat.

EM1000 universal sanding sealer can be used in three different ways:

  • As a pre-stain wood conditioner/Sealer to ensure a uniform coloration;
  • As a clear, universal sanding sealer; and
  • As a Color delivery vehicle, such as a special effects spray stain, a shading or toning vehicle or used as a translucent stain when tinted with universal pigments.

EM1000 can be tinted with any water-soluble dye.

DO NOT USE EM1000 Universal Sanding Sealer underneath Emtech HSF5000 Primers or EM6500 and EM6600 Pigmented Lacquers.

How to use

Preparation:

  • As a Pre-Stain Conditioner and Sanding Sealer: Sand the surface using a 220 grit or finer sandpaper.

  • As a color delivery vehicle: EM1000 can be tinted with water soluble dyes and universal pigments.

    • Water soluble dyes : 0,50 - 5% by liquid volume.
    • Mixol Pigments: 1.0-10.0% by liquid volume.

Application:

  • Pre-Stain Conditioner: Apply 1 coat of EM1000 diluted 50/50 with water. Let dry for 30 to 60 minutes and sand using a fine sandpaper.

  • Sanding Sealer: Use EM1000 sanding sealer undiluted on all types of domestic and exotic wood species. Apply a first coat using a spray gun, poly-bristle brush ou varnish roller. Let dry for 20 to 30 minutes. Apply a second coat. Let dry 1 hour before sanding lightly.

Use only in well ventilated areas. Avoid inhaling spray mist. Wear a NIOSH/MSHA approved respirator during spray applications.

Freeze/thaw stability

Avoid too many freeze-thaw cycles. If the product has frozen, allow the product to thaw at room temperature for 48 hours without stirring.

Easy water cleanup of spray guns etc. A thicker consistency and harder surface than the top coats it seems to me. Sprays on easily in a light mottled pattern which prevents fisheyes etc. Very easy to use and seems to adhere decently to shellac bases. Using alcohol and pumice on a buffer you can actually pore fill mahogany or other open pored woods with a swirling motion once dry. The topcoats even more easily so.

I used this product as a pre-stain conditionner, by diluting 50/50 with water. It worked flawlessly.

I use it as a flake carrier, and as a carrier for candie dye. It's crystal clear, I can even spray through an airbrush, and it dries fast. No problem to then clear with EM6000.
