Directions for use

Preparation

Recommended weathering duration: soft/coniferous woods such as Larch or Douglas Fir, approx. 6 weeks; freshly pressure impregnated, thermo treated or tropical wood species etc., approx. 12 weeks.

Use Osmo Wood Reviver Power Gel to clean the wood surface and remove grey wood cells before renovating the area. Wood surface must be clean, dry and frost-free (moisture content max. 20 %).

Osmo Decking-Oil is ready to use – please do not thin. Stir well. Thoroughly clean or lightly sand old microporous stains or completely remove old varnishes before application. Always wear a dust mask when sanding.

The finished surface is, among other things, influenced by the wood’s natural characteristics, therefore a trial application is required before finishing.

Application

Apply thinly and evenly along the wood grain with either an Osmo hand brush or the Osmo Microfibre Roller, and spread well. Allow for good ventilation whilst drying. Apply a second coat as before.

When renovating one coat, applied to the clean and dry surface, will usually be sufficient.

Drying time

Approx. 12 hours (normal climatic conditions, 23°C/50% normal humidity). Lower temperatures and/or high humidity can increase the drying time.

Coverage

Approx. 24 m²/litre (260 sq ft / L)

Note: Product coverage depends significantly on the character of the wood. All information refers to smooth and planed/cut surfaces. Other surfaces, e.g. grooved or ribbed, may lead to reduced coverage.

Depending on the wood species and its natural characteristics (e.g. surface), specific results may vary. Therefore, a trial application is always required.

Keep out of reach of children. Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing. Contains 2- butanonoxime. May produce an allergic reaction. If medical advice is needed, have product container or label at hand. Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.

FAQ

Can you use Osmo 1277 Teak (clear) Decking-Oil on a deck?

It is not recommended to use only the Osmo's Teak Decking-Oil Teak 1277 color variant. You should first apply a coat of Osmo colored Decking-Oil to protect against UV rays, and then you can apply the Teak 1277 variety, which is clear, afterwards. The oil used in the first coat must offer UV protection, which is not the case with the Teak 1277 variant.

How to fix a slippery deck treated with Osmo Decking-Oil?

It is recommended to apply Osmo Anti-Slip Decking Oil 430 to prevent the deck from becoming slippery. This microporous oil offers an ideal anti-slip surface for the Canadian climate thanks to its special high-density organic additive.

In addition to improving safety, this oil protects the surface against mold, fungi, and insects, thereby extending the lifespan of your deck. Its satin finish is also resistant to water and dirt, making deck maintenance easier.

Furthermore, unlike some paints and varnishes, this oil does not crack, peel, or blister, making the application of a maintenance coat simpler and quicker.

Overall, it is recommended to apply this oil as a final coat to prevent any slipping risk and improve the safety, durability, and aesthetics of your deck.

How to maintain a deck finished with this product without darkening it too much?

You have two options, provided that the finish of your deck is still in good condition.

  1. The direct application, without requiring prior sanding, of a layer of Osmo Clear Decking Oil 1277. This approach will not only revive the original color of your deck but also restore its luster.

  2. The use of a mixture in a ratio of 1:1 of Decking Oil in the original color of your deck with the Clear Decking Oil 1277 variety, which you can also apply without sanding.

That being said, if you believe that your deck is still in excellent condition, it may be preferable to simply perform a thorough cleaning and postpone any intervention until the following year.

Why is the coverage lower than what is indicated on the can?

Typically, the coverage indications provided for Osmo oils are reliable. If you observe excessive product consumption, it could be attributed to applying the oil too generously. It is crucial to spread the oil coat evenly, not only to optimize coverage but also to achieve a satisfactory final result and avoid excessive opacity. Osmo Decking Oil offers a semi-transparency after two applications.

Another potential cause could be that the wood was sanded too roughly, which could increase its absorption of the oil. If sanding is necessary, we recommend not using a grit higher than 100 before applying the oil.

Lastly, we always advise conducting a preliminary test before starting the entire project.

How do I clean a deck treated with Osmo colored Decking-Oil?

We recommend using Osmo's Decking Cleaner, following the manufacturer's instructions carefully. Once your deck is clean, you can apply a refreshing coat if needed.

Disappointing product

Travis Lockhart · Sep 8, 2024

One full year later the entire deck is peeling. It looked great upon application and, despite having followed instructions to the letter, it really cannot stand up the way it is advertised to. $1200 in finish down the drain in 11 months. Do yourself a favour and avoid staining horizontal surfaces with Osmo or go down to the states and get a Defy product. Yet another Osmo let down…

The best one on the market

I have used for the first time the grey Osmo deck stain after a lot of research . I wanted to wait for the first winter( Montreal one !) to be done so I can have an hones opinion. It looks like the first day .
The price is a bit high but it is first quality nothing to be found among regular products.

Quite resistant to weathering and other attacks

Tyler Rochford · Feb 22, 2021

We used this product on a platform/deck we built for an abri in our backyard. So far, it has resisted my children pushing chairs on it, the dog stretching , and even snow shovelling. I removed one star because the appearance is more opaque than we were expecting.
