Osmo Polyx®-Oil is a very durable Hardwax-Oil wood coating especially suited for hardwood floors and furniture. Polyx®-Oil is derived from natural vegetable oils and waxes, and protects wood against water, dirt, beer, wine, cola and saliva.

A unique combination of natural oils and waxes provides a finish that can be spot-repaired and/or restored/renewed with no sanding required, therefore wood never needs complete refinishing again.

Osmo Polyx®-Oil is microporous and does not crack, flake, peel or blister. In comparison to conventional finishes, the natural vegetable oils and waxes allow for an easy-to-apply, hard-wearing finish that can be applied by professionals and homeowners alike.

Polyx-Oil 3051 Raw

Polyx-Oil 3051 Raw contains white pigments and is used to preserve the whiteness of white woods (white pine, maple, cedar, spruce, beech, aspen. oak) or white and gray colored wood. Polyx-Oil 3051 Raw is not recommanded on open grain woods (walnut, mahogany, elm) or colored woods other than white or gray.

Directions for Use

Preparation:

Wood surface must be clean and dry (moisture content max. 18%). Clean or slightly sand old micro-porous finishes, remove old varnishes. If required (rough surfaces) sand before application.
We recommend a final sanding with 120 - 150 grit sandpaper. Remove all dust carefully.

If required floors can be coloured using Osmo Wood Wax Finish.

Methods of Application:

Osmo Polyx®-Oil is ready to use, please do not thin. Stir carefully before use.

1st coat: Apply a thin and even coat following the grain of the wood grain using an Osmo Hand Brush, an Osmo Floor Brush or Osmo Floor Roller.

Leave to dry for at least 8 - 10 hours. Ensure good ventilation and room temperatures above 18° C.

2nd coat: Apply thinly as above. Remove surplus immediately. Alternatively apply second coat by scraper and buff the surface with a white pad. Leave to dry at least 8 - 10 hours, ventilate well.
When thoroughly dry, surface can be buffed or polished with hand polisher or buffing machine.

Note: Cork floors will absorb more oil – remove any surplus immediately and leave to dry for at least 24 hours providing good ventilation after every coat.

Certain tropical hardwoods are so dense or laden with oils and resins that they may not be compatible with Osmo Polyx®-Oil. Test the finish on a few boards or call for advice.

The Osmo Polyx®-Oil can take considerably longer to dry in cases where the air is humid, the temperature is low or the product is over applied.

Drying Time:

Approx. 8-10 hours (normal climatic conditions, 23 °C /50 % rel. humidity). Lower temperatures and/or higher air humidity can increase the drying time.

Coverage:

2.5 Liter will cover approx. 645 ft² with one coat. Coverage will vary depending on the type, age and texture of the wood.

Cleaning of tools:

Clean work tools with Osmo Brush Cleaner (benzene-free) or oil thinner

Note:

Oils accentuate the natural colour tone of wood (permanent wet effect). Applying the product too rich or offering deficient ventilation leads to drying delays and a typical smell of the oil.

Caution: For the interior of cabinets and drawers - 1 thin coat using a lint free cloth is the recommendation.

A trial coat is recommended.

Due to the extreme absorption of cork surfaces, make sure to apply an especially thin coating. Cork surfaces also require a longer drying period (minimum of 24 hours).

Wooden surfaces that are treated with Osmo Polyx®-Oil Original are easy to maintain. Dirt and dust can be easily pick up with a broom or vacuum cleaner.

For daily maintenance please mix the Osmo Wash and Care with water and clean the area with a moist (not wet!) mop.

For a deep cleaning of entire surface or to remove stubborn stains Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner is recommended.

To obtain a High Satin sheen, once the entire surface has thoroughly dried, apply a thin coat of Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner using a lint free cloth.

FAQ

Can I use a stain other than an Osmo brand stain under a Polyx-Oil finish?

Although the manufacturer strongly suggests using Osmo products together as they ensure compatibility, it is possible to use water-based or oil-based stains under a Polyx-Oil finish. In this case, it is important to perform a test before proceeding with the entire project. It is also essential to strictly follow the drying times required by the stain used.

Review

Great!!

Dave Growden · May 25, 2024

We ended up putting down 3 thin coats on a 130 year old pine floor (striped and sanded). Roughly 750 sq ft, about 20% of a 10 liter pail left over. It has a 5 year shelf life, so I have a reminder to redo the floors in four years.

Love this stuff!!

Favourite oil/wax for light coloured woods

Easy and enjoyable to apply. I often shellac with a super blond then sand following with 3 coats for ash chairs.

My go to

Jeff · Jun 26, 2020

Excellent product for furniture. Very easy to apply and builds nicely. Best used without any stain for the most absorption into the wood. Buffed on walnut and it'll be a finish like you've never seen. As tough as a wipe on poly without the harsh fumes.

Great finish

I used the sample packet on some of my newest priducts and a little goes a long way. They turned out great, I'll definitely be grabbing some more in the near future.

Used as a table top finish

Martin Vendryes · Mar 5, 2019

Competitive with Rubio Monocoat (which I sometimes also use), this has the advantage of not needing a catalyst; i.e., one can and no mixing for application. Long shelf life (2 years after opening). Protects well.
