FAQ

How to choose the appropriate HVLP System for your specific requirements?

HVLP Systems are important for achieving a professional finish in woodworking, and they come in various models with different features such as power, efficiency, and durability. For beginners, a two-stage turbine with a 5 psi pressure can deliver a smooth finish with varnishes, lacquers, and paints that require thinning. More powerful turbines with three to five stages and a pressure range of 6 to 9.5 psi can handle any type of finish with less dilution.

It's crucial to choose the correct needle for the viscosity of the product being sprayed. Although turbines can be used by both DIYers and professionals, it's important to consider your specific usage requirements when selecting a turbine. For small monthly projects, an entry-level turbine is sufficient, but daily use requires a more powerful turbine such as a three-stage or higher. It's essential to consider your future needs and make an appropriate investment in equipment that is tailored to your usage.

Things to keep in mind when buying your first HVLP System

Buying your first turbine often comes with a lot of questions — and that’s completely normal. To get the most out of your new equipment and ensure a smart investment, there are a few key things to keep in mind right from the start.

The turbine typically comes with a spray gun, a 25-foot hose, and the turbine unit itself. This starter kit is enough to begin working. However, many users quickly notice that the included hose is fairly stiff and heavy. Adding a 6-foot lightweight flexible hose to the end of the main hose makes the spray gun much easier to handle.

Proper spray gun maintenance is crucial for long-term performance. That’s why having a maintenance kit is strongly recommended.

If you’re working with pigmented paints or lacquers, you’ll also need to swap out the tip and needle for a 1.8 mm version. Pigmented products contain significantly more solids than clear lacquers or varnishes, and require the right setup for smooth application.

It’s also a good idea to have a replacement filter for your turbine on hand — a small but important part of routine upkeep.

If you use your turbine regularly, a wireless remote control can be a great convenience. Since the turbine should be placed on the floor, away from your work area, the remote allows you to turn it on or off without having to walk back and forth.
Finally, for easier storage, consider installing quick-connect couplers (male and female) between the turbine and the hose. This saves you from screwing and unscrewing the hose every time you use it.

In short, these simple add-ons can greatly improve how your turbine performs — and make your work easier, faster, and more enjoyable.

Amazing spray system - even for thick finishes

David Bedrosian · Jun 4, 2025

I've been spraying finishes for more than 20 years using my compressor and several conversion HVLP guns. This is my first turbine system and it has been fantastic. I've been using it to spray Zinsser's 1-2-3 primer which is really thick. I get great atomization and a nice spray pattern with the turbine set on level 6 using the T-75 gun with a 2.0mm tip. The remote control for the turbine is really handy and the long hose gives me plenty of reach. I converted the T-75 gun to use the 3M PPS system which makes cleanup even easier. I look forward to using the D6 on other finishes. This is a great system that I highly recommend.
